Shamian Island (Liwan district)

Shamian Island is a small but very beautiful island filled with nice trees, sculptures, fountains and beautiful historical colonial buildings in European style, in various conditions. Shamian, that means "sandy surface", is situated in the south part of Liwan district, next to Pearl River. It used to be the place where impressive foreign trade mansions were built during the colonial period. In a row of houses called Thirteen Factories, foreigners lived and did business. The island is 900 meters long from east to west and 300 meters wide from south to north. Shamian was an important port during the Sing and Qing dynasties. After 1949, the mansions of Shamian became government offices or apartment houses and the churches were turned into factories, it is a must see for tourists. Everywhere you find nice sculptures of people from the colonial past of Guangzhou. The island is almost free of cars, but not completely unfortunately so you have to watch out while strolling on the tranquil steets where you don't expect to see cars. Militaries and policemen are patrolling the streets and there is a police station on the island. Hotels, restaurants, café, souvenir stores and health instititues can be found here today. The White Swan hotel that was built in 1980 was one of Guangzhou's first highrises, but is today the only tall building on the island.
