Hong Kong's MTR (Mass Transit Railway Corporation) is probably one of the world's best public transportation systems. The so called Octupus cards can be loaded with your desired value, and public transportation is very cheap. For 8 HK$ for example, you can travel from Central to Stanley. HK has an extensive subway system with many lines, all information is in both Chinese and English and the trains always follow the schedule. Double decked trams, double decked buses, cable cars and ferries completes the system. The idea with double deckers is a heritage from the British colonial period. You can also take the subway underneath Victoria Harbour, from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon. The Airport Express transports you to the airport from Central for about 90 HK$ in less then 30 minutes, and you can take the regional train to the Chinese border near Shenzhen. It takes about one hour to Shenzhen from Central, and you can take the hoovercraft ferry to Macau in 1.5 hours. The MTR subway system opened in 1982.
