Taipa Island is an island 2.5km to the South of the peninsula, conncted by 3 beautiful bridges. The latest hotel/casino projects have been developed here, like Venetian, that is the world's largest hotel and casino, and Galaxy, also one of the largest.City of Dreams is a new projects that consist of a number of large hotels, Sands, Conrad, the world's largest Sheraton, the world's largest Holiday Inn, Grand Hyatt and Hard Rock Hotel are some of them. The center of the new area is the Cotai Strip, that will become Macao's answer to Las Vegas "The Strip". The Portugese occupied the island in 1851. On the evening of our daytrip we took a taxi to the island via the Macau-Taipa Bridge, mostly to visit Venetian, that is themed around the city of Venice, Italy.

It opened in 2011 and is like a city-within-the city! It was designed by Gary Goddard. It has  2 200 rooms and consist of Galaxy, Okura and Banyan Tree hotels. A JW Marriott and a Ritz-Carlton are planned to be added. A resort with an artificial beach and a wave pool is also planned for the hotel. The 6 cupolas of the hotel towers are all of 24 karat gold! 3D cinemas, wishing crystals, a fortuen diamond and the world's largest laser show are among the incredible feature of the resort. The project's cost has increased to HKD 16.5 billion. Galaxy Macau is a huge hotel along Cotai Strip on Taipa Island. It opened in 2011 and is like a city-within-the city! The Venetian Macao Casino Hotel is the world's largest hotel and casino! It opened in 2007 and is even larger then the Venetian in Las Vegas. Venetian is owned by Las Vegas Sands and is situated on the Cotai Strip on Taipa Island. Venetian has about 7000 rooms, many of them suites, and the tallest of the buildings in the complex is 248m tall and has 39 floors, that makes it Macau's 2nd tallest skyscraper. There is a long canal complete with gondolas and a shopping mall with everything from Gucci to McDonald's, several large lobbys that looks like castles (Grand lobby is the largest), many restaurants, two copies of squares in Venice, one with an artificial sky and the other with an outdoor lake with a Venetian bridge, where you can watch theatrical shows, music and fireworks, a 15 000 seat indoor arean (Cotai Arena) and a theater. The casino, that is the world's largest, measures 50,700 m2 and is divided into 4 themed gaming areas. The casino offers 3400 slot machines and 800 gambling tables.
