The outskirts
of Malmö
This page is about the outskirts of Malmö. In the outskirts, you can find Turning Torso, Malmö´s newest landmark, and the bridge that connects Malmö and Sweden: Öresundsbron. You can also find the huge limestone quarry there. These three important places are all situated in the southwestern outskirts of Malmö, just as some upscale residence areas. But Öresundsbron and Turning Torso have seperate pages. In Hyllie (the same area as the bridge and the water tower are), Europe´s tallest building was planned, but it has just been cancelled. It was the hotel/office scraper Scandinavian Tower, that would be 85 floors and 325m.

Hyllie:
Hyllie and its planned new districit Hyllievång, will be built in the future close to Öresundsbron in southwest Malmö, has a lot of large projects going on. In Hyllie, Malmö Arena is just completed next to the once so lonely Hyllie Vattentorn from 1973. The new city tunnel station, a shopping mall with about 200 stores, Emporia, and the highrise Hyllie Point are under construction in the area, plus several new residential buildings are planned. Also 2 hotels, Chinatown, wide avenues, a botanical garden and a theme park are being planned in the area.
Hyllie Vattentorn, the 62m high water tower from 1973 has a coffee shop and an observation deck above the four pillars
. Many people think it looks like an UFO, especially
at nights when it is shining with a cool strong blue light. Sadly, as you can
see, the structure needs a renovation. This is close to the site were the very tall skyscrapers Scandinavian
Tower and Malmö Tower were supposed to be built.
Malmö Arena, is the huge new arena for events like hockey, other sports and concerts. It was completed in 2009 (but the picture is from 2010). It can take 12-14 000 visitors and is located just next to the water tower.

The construction site of Point Hyllie, that will become Sweden’s 3rd tallest highrise upon completion.
It will have 27 stories and be 95m tall, 13 m taller than Kronprinsen, but 95 m lower than Turning Torso.
Construction begun in 2009.
The new Malmö Arena u/c, with Hyllie Vattentorn (the “ufo” water tower) to the left in May 2008 (it will be finished the same year). The construction progress has went pretty fast on Percy Nilsson’s project.

Svågertorp:
Svågertorp is a new area with several large retail stores like Ikea and Bauhaus, located next to the highway close to Öresundsbron.
It is bordering Hyllie.
The brand new IKEA (late 2009), that is the world’s 2nd largest (after Stockholm).
Stadion area:
Swedbank Stadion is Malmö’s new main football stadium. It is be 27 m tall and host 21 000 visitors and was completed in spring 2009.
Swedbank Stadion u/c 2008.
Malmö stadion, the old stadium from 1958, will only hold athletic games in the future. It can take 26 500 visitors, more than the new stadium.
Vintrie:
Bunkeflo kyrka in Vintrie, a small village that soon will grow together with Hyllie.
Here you can see how close Vintrie is to Hyllie in Malmö.
Turning Torso can also be seen from Vintrie.
Jägersro:

Jägersrotornet is the tallest TV tower in
Malmö(110m with mast). It is dominating Jägersro and all of the southern
outskirts of Malmö.
Heleneholm:
Heleneholmsverket. This 130m tall chimney
is Malmö´s tallest structure until Turning Torso is completed (not
counting Öresundsbron).
Fridhem and Ribersborg:
2 wealthy areas between central Malmö and Limhamn. Ribersborg has its own beach, the 2km long "Ribban", that has views of Västra Hamnen.
A beautiful residence building near Fridhemstorget.
Ribersborg residences. The building to the
right is famous for its architecture and the wellknown residents. Ribersborg is
situated just southwest of the city center.
Limhamn:
The suburb looking Limhamn, formerly a town of its own, is Malmö's most wealthy district together with its neighbouring areas.
The limestone quarry of Limhamn, in Swedish called
Limhamns Kalkbrott, is impressive because of its size. In the background you can see the 2 polygons of Öresundsbron.
It is said that all the
buildings in the whole Malmö could take place in this giant hole! The bridge,
also in southwestern Malmö, can be seen in the distance.
The foundation of the famous statue of Jesus in Rio were built of limestone from this quarry.
The limestone quarry is 1600 meter long and 600 m wide. It was officially inaugurated in 1886, although it has been used since the 17th century.
Here you can see why it has been compared to Grand Canyon.
The impressive limestone quarry.
As new senior residential midrise buildings, called Victoria Park, are u/c at Malmö’s limestone quarry, the look is dramatically changing from ths side. The buildings are promoted to have views over "the Grand Canyon of Malmö". Turning Torso is to the left and Bunkeflo kyrka in Vintrie to the right. A spa, cinema, restaurant, golf and tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pool, a 24 hour reception and a vine cellar are all parts of the Victoria Park complex.

Potatisåkern ("potatoe field").
An up scale residental area may be inspired by classic style and postmodernism.

Wesleykyrkan (Wesley Church), Limhamn. I found it
interesting because it looks very American. Limhamn is a southwestern suburb,
bought by the city of Malmö in the sixties.
North Malmö:

The HQ for the local newspapers Sydsvenska Dagbladet
and Kvällsposten in the northern outskirts of Malmö.
Malmö Airport:

Malmö Airport (formerly called Sturup). It is pretty small, because of the nearness to Copenhagen Airport. I
find the yellow theme pretty ugly. Sturup is situated very far from the city.
