Mariahilf - 5th district

Neuebau Mariahilf is the district along the long and popular shopping street Mariahilfer Strasse. The Eastern part ends in downtown and could be compared to Oxford Street in London, with large neon signs and both cheap and exclusive brand stores and touristy restaurants. The middle part, close to my hostel, is a bit more multircultural with a bit cheaper brand stores and oriental fastfood restaurants. The southern part of Mariahilfer Strasse is very ugly despite it ends near Schönbrunn Castle. The whole district and road was named after a church.

Wombat The Base (the blue building) in Mariahilf district near Westbahnhof is where I stayed. The street is Grangasse.
It was a decent place to stay for the price, if you can endure to share room with others.
The Base was the first of 4 Wombats in the world.

The following pictures shows a walk on Mariahilfer Strasse from Rosinagasse close to my hotel to the city center, that shows how long the road is:

Mariahilfer Strasse, the part near my hostel.

The beginning of Fünfhaus district.

The circular place near Westbahnhof where the more exclusive part begins. Even if it is ugly, I like this place since it is very urban, Vienna's Shibuya.

A circular building at the circular place where Gürtel street meets Mariahilfer Strasse.

The most commercial street, Vienna's Oxford Street.

Above: Brand stores like H&M, Bodyshop, Yves Rocher and C&A.

Funkis building.

Mariahilfer Kirche, the church that gave its name to the road and the entire 6th district! The Baroque church was completed in 1689.

A market in front of Mariahilfer Kirche.

Einkaufpassage, a passage to Gumpendorferstrasse.

Stiftskirche at Mariahilfer Strasse.

The northern edge of the road is a bit hilly and curvy, and reminds a bit of Paris.

The Northern end of Mariahilfer Strasse. Note the black Hummer taxi to the left!

The first sight after walking the long Mariahilfer Strasse from my hostel. The huge building is the Museum of Fine Arts.

A walk at Mariahilfer Strasse after dark:

A view from the window of my hostel Wombat.

View from Wombat: The tracks of the shabby and rundown Westbahnhof, that is under reconstrucion.

View towards Wienerberg highrise district from the 8th floor of Wombat The Base Hostel.

Skyline view of Fünfhaus and Mariahilf districts from the hostel.

Fünfhaus

I have heard this is a very bad area, but didn't see any signs of that. It is included just because there is an impressive church there, very close to Mariahilf.

Kirche Maria vom Siege am Gürtel (Maria of the Victory Church). A very underrated church, one of the most beautiful in Vienna, yet almost unknown outside the city. The Neo-Gothic church's dark colour is much because of the heavy traffic of Gürtel.

It is 68m high to the top of the dome.

Friederich von Schmidt, who also drew Rathaus, was the architect of Maria vom Siege Church. It is actually located in the 15th district of Vienna, Fünfhaus, but is very close to Mariahilf and the hostel.

A nice street in Fünfhaus, not at all showing the decay that is rumoured in the district.
