Outskirts of Antwerp
JUSTITIEPALEIS, ANTWERP LAWCOURTS, ZURENBORG, AMERIKALEJ

In the outskirts of Antwerp you will find more modern buildings then in the city center such as the Antwerp Lawcourts by Richard Rogers, but also older buildings. Amerikalej is the prominent boulevard in the city and leads to the outskirts from Astridplein.

AMERIKALEJ (BRITSELEJ/FRANKRIJKLEI):

This is a long boulevard with tall trees that goes southeastwards from Astridplein in the city center to the southwest end of the city center, where you find the futuristic and new Justitiepaleis complex (Antwerp Lawcourts). Along the way it changes name from Frankrijklei (closest to city center) to Britselej and then Amerikalej. Along the boulevard you will find a tram line and many prominent buildings.

Justitiepaleis (New Palace of Justice), designed by the world famous architect Richard Rogers, is the most prominent among Antwerp's newer buildings. It is situated in the soutwest end of the central city and was completed in 2005. It has 32 courts on 5 floors.

Justitiepaleis, dubbed Vlinderpaleis (Butterfly Palace) reminds a bit of Sydney's opera house.

Justitiepaleis. We only saw this huge complex from the bus, thanks for the train strike.

Modern highrises in the southern outskirts   Antwerp has only a small regional airport, but Brussels Airport is only 40 minutes away by bus from Antwerp. Trains were not an option, because of the strike!

ZURENBORG:

Zurenborg is an upscale neighbourhood in south part of Antwerp, partly in the district of Berchem. Here you will find beautiful townhouses in different architectural styles. This is where the bus stopped, that took us from Lier after the train strike. The name of the street above is Cogels-Osylei, and is one of the richest in Antwerp.

LINKOROEVER and RIVER SCHELDE:

Linkeroever is a district just to the west of the Old Town. It is only divided from the Old Town by River Schelde. This photos was taken just a few blocks from Grote Markt!
