Friedrichstrasse
CHECKPOINT CHARLIE

Friedrichstrasse is a long, narrow street, that is running from Oranienburger Tor in Mitte/city center in the North to Mehringplatz in Kreuzberg in the South. It is the core of the Friedrichstadt area and is considered one of Berlin's most exclusive streets and the foremost shopping street with famous brand stores for everything from clothes to cars. The exclusive department stores Galeries Lafayette and Quartier 206 is also located here. The most famous attraction on Friedrichstrasse is Checkpoint Charlie, the spot that was guarded by Russian and American forces until the wall came down in 1989. For long, it went into decline, but recently most buildings have been refurbished and brand new building complexes have been constructed. There is still a lot of construction around the street. Friedrichstrasse passes Unter den Linden and Gendarmenmarkt. Friedrichstrasse is pretty lively even at night, since some stores have long opening hours, you can see how it looks after dark in the Berlin by night section.

Checkpoint Charlie:

Checkpoint Charlie is the most famous crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War. The name was given by Western Allies Forces. It is situated on the border of Kreuzberg (former West) and Mitte (former East).

The former border to the West, guarded by Russian forces.

Developers demolished the East German watch point tower in 2000 to make way for new development. It was the last remaining original structure from the checkpoint. Ironically, nothing has been built.

This is where the wall stood. The Allied Forces guarded the border to the East. This is just a copy of the guard house, the original was removed to a museum.
