MUSEUM ISLAND, BERLINER DOM, CATHEDRAL

Museumsinsel, Museum Island, is a narrow island in River Spree in Mitte, Berlin's East city center. It got its name from the many museums that are situated on the island. The large and beautiful cathedral is also situated there. Pergamon Museum has its own section.

Berliner Dom - the Cathedral:

Berliner Dom is a huge cathedral that is situated at Museum Island in the east city center. It was built between 1895 and 1905 from drawings by Julius Raschdorf. It was bombed during World War II and damaged heavily. Between 1975 and 1984 the cathedral structure was rebult, and in 1993 it reopened after the completion of the renovation of the interior. Beneath the church there is a crypt that has a royal burial place. It is a protestant church. The measurements are 115m to the top of the dome and it is 114m long.

Schloßplatz (Castle place) is the green square between the Cathedral and the Old Museum (Altes Museum). There is a circle with a nice fountain in the middle.

Altes Museum (Old Museum) is situated in a wide classicist building at Schloßplatz, opposite the cathedral. It was built in 1828. The façade has 18 jonian columns and the gables 20 corinthian columns. It has a collection of classical antiques.

Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) was completed in 1876. It was damaged heavily during WWII, but was restored in the 1960s DDR.

Bode-Museum. It is a group of merged museums that now features classical architecture and byzantine art.

Bode-Museum was completed in 1904 and has a strategical location at the edge of the Museum Island.

Pergamon Museum:

Pergamon Museum is the largest, most inspiring and most famous museum on Museumsinsel. It features large scale replicas of ancient buildings, the most remarkable are the Gate of Ishtar from Babylon and a temple in the city of Pergamon. There was also an occaisional (2012) exhibition with a vertical, cylindrical panorama of the city of Pergamon.
