Grundtvigs kirke, Bispebjerg
- Grundtvig's Church, Dansekapellet, Tagensvej, Fredensborgvej, På Bjerget
The Bispebjerg district is situated far to the Northwest of central Copenhagen. It is mostly consisiting of dull yellow brick residential buildings, but there is one structure that really stands out; Grundtvigs kirke, a church with a very rare expressionist architecture and a 49m tall futuristic looking towwer. It was built in red brick, just like the surrounding buildings, but the shape of the short side (West facade) reminds more of a rocket ready for take off then a church. The nave (long side) and East side are more similar to common gothic churches though. But it looks more modern, the futuristic looking tower was built 1921-1927. It was then called Tårnkirken (the tower church) and the whole church was completed in 1940. The church was named after the priest and poet Nikolaj Frederik Severin Grundtvig. The total length of the church is 76m. Peder Vilhelm Jensen Klint and his son Kaare Klint, who took over after he died, were the architects.
The church is surrounded by a number of building called På Bjerget (On the hill). A long tree lined road leads from the church to the cemetery. The interior is gothic, and is comparable in size to Copenhagen Cathedral (that I also visited later the same day). I took one of the yellow local buses from Rådhuspladsen to the church, it took about 30 min and the bus is free if you have travelled to Copenhagen by train the same day so tourists can easily access the church.
