Dubai metro This page is about the futuristic and very new metro system (inauguated in 2009) of Dubai, that is the first urban train system in the Arabian peninsula. The track is elevated on viaducts above the road (only a few parts underground) and the trains are driverless and driven by computers, so you can stand in the front of the train and look right on the track, in the middle of the futuristic skyscrapers, giving a feeling of a sci-fi movie. So far (2014), it has only two lines. The red line is the longest one and passes most of Dubai's most important attraction, parallel with the shore, and the green line is a shorter one. There are also many new routes under construction. One special feature is that there are cars for only women. The metro stations are situated in huge golden buildings with futuristic curvy architecture. Many of the metro stations are situated along Sheikh Zayed Road, with tall pedestrian bridges above the road, in many cases offering spectacular views of Dubai's skyline. It is very cheap to use the metro in Dubai, but you don't see many tourists or business men in the metro, mostly Southeast Asian workers. The metro is superclean and working very well. On the downside is that you have to pass through endless walkways and go through huge mall just to get to the some of the stations. |
