Scheveningen

THE BEACH DISTRICT OF THE HAGUE

Scheveningen is like a wealthy seaside suburb, but is actually part of Hague, that has a very long beach at the North Sea and a famous resort hotel. I relaxed there for a while before I took the tram back to downtown for a rock concert. In Scheveningen you can find one of Netherlands longest beaches, a pier with 2 floors, a long beach promenade and many hotels and restaurants. Scheveningen is also known for its nightlife and Madurodam, a miniature theme park that I visited as a child in the 1980s.

The beach of Scheveningen:

The Steigenberger Kurhaus Hotel seen from Strandweg next to the beach.

The Scheveningen Pier is 380m long and features an indoor promenade in 2 floors plus a promenade on the roof. Restaurants and a bungyjump tower can also be found in the complex.

Strandweg, a long beach promenade where you can find resaurants and stores.

There are many restaurants at the beach esplanade. Scheveningen is a popular place for artists.

The Scheveningen Pier and the beach. At the pier you can take a 300m long promenade above the water of the North Sea. The new pier was built in 1961, after the old one from 1960 was destroyd by the Germans.

Scheveningen's beach is very large.

The upper deck of the pier's promenade.

The beach just next to the windy North Sea.

I thought the beach place should be a luxorious place for tourists, but it was crowded with Hague's youngsters and gangs in the evening.

Around Gevers Deynootweg, the main road:

Leonardo da Vinci, this residential tower from 1997 is Scheveningen's tallest. It has 27 floors and consist of 3 parts.

Holland Casino.

Gevers Deynootweg, the main road of Scheveningen, close to the beach.

Steigenberger Kurhaus Hotel, the most famous building in Scheveningen. It was built in 1887 and was saved from demolition in 1972.

The Rolling Stones played their shortest gig ever at the Kurhaus, when the building was a theater. They had to stop playing because the crowded started to ruin the interior.

The road to Scheveningen:

Some other parts of Scheveningen, mostly residential townhouses:

Townhouses and a church in the non seaside part.

In Scheveningen you can find luxorious townhouses and mansions as well as apartment blocks for common people.
