Östercity
Östercity is a district east of downtown, mainly consisting of Östra Förstadsgatan. This street is running from Värnhemstorget to the city center. It use to be a pretty dead area, though there are some interesting buildings, because this is were the old city meets the new.
Radisson SAS Hotel Malmö. This glass building,
that hosts Malmö´s most luxorious hotel, was built in the late 80s
and was integrated with the historic Bikupan to the left and the shopping galleria
Caroli City to the right. Bikupan, a former savings bank, is one of the city´s
oldest preserved buildings.
S.t Caroli Kyrka. A pretty small church next to
Caroli City.
Drottningtorget. The yellow building to the left
is a museum for wagons.
Rörsjöstaden
Rörsjöparken. Not a very beautiful park,
but there are many beautiful buildings in the surroundings. A popular place for
the residents of Rörsjöstaden in summer, but many alcoholics and homeless
people use to hang here too.
S:t Pauli Kyrka. This gothic yellow brick church in Rörsjöstaden,
the fashionable eastern outskirts of central Malmö, is very impressive.
St Pauli in winter.
The Landstadt Building, one of very few buldings in Brutalist style, in January 2006.
A snowy cross street to Kungsgatan.
Värnhem
Värnhemstorget. This square serves as a gate
to central Malmö in the east, and thus there is very much traffic. I lived
just one block from it for 8 years.Värnhemstorget is Malmö´s answer
to Sergels torg in Stockholm, do I need to say more?
There have been a lot of problems with Värnhemstorget. Many alcoholics
and homeless people use to hang there and most of the architecture is pretty boring,
the square is dominated by this 12-story commie block residential building. The square was
totally remodeled in the beginning of the new millennium. It was transformed
from a huge bus stop to a real square and a new ugly bus terminal was built
(to the right in the first pic). There is a new memorial of the WW2 "white buses" on the square.
The huge new shopping mall Entré, that was inaugurated in March 2009, has totally transformed Värnhem. It is Malmö's largest and newest shopping mall and contains about 75 stores and restaurants on 3 floors. It also contains a cinemana, a gym and a funhouse for children. The whole complex stretches from Värnhemstorget to the freeway entrance and consists of 2 buildings connected by a skybridge.
The complex has been discussed for over 20 years since it has a very strategic location at the "entrance to Malmö", but nothing has been built until now. The appearance of the structure is a bit unfriendly and boxy. From the highway it doesn't look beautiful at all, but a garden under construction on the front.
The entrance to Entré (entrance in Swedish). There is also an entrance at Värnhemstorget. The mall has glass enclosed elevators and several atriums, but unfortunately no fountains or waterfalls, so the architecture is pretty standard.
The pictures are from the opening day in March 2009.
Entré with its strangely lightened glass is the first thing you see when approaching Malmö from the highway from the North.
The new residential building (2009) right next to the Entré complex is also a part of revitalizing the entrance to Malmö, that for decades just consisted of shabby parking lots.
Eon's headquarter (formerly Sydkraft) at Nobelvägen near Värnhem.
The narrow atrium inside the Eon Building. It has glass enclosed elevators and
this stone that is hanging some centimetres above the floor and is moving when
the Earth moves because of the gravitation!
